Erasmus - Opportunities for Academic Staff within Europe
Erasmus+ Staff mobility opportunities for academic staff are available via Staff Mobility for Teaching. It is important to note that an Erasmus+ inter-institutional agreement (IIA) must be in place before staff teaching mobility (outgoing or incoming) can take place. The proposal and approval process is explained on the UCD Global website.
What are the criteria?
The criteria for Staff Mobility for Teaching are:
- Duration – minimum period 2 (consecutive) days; maximum period 2 months. However, funding is provided for one week only.
- The teaching requirements are a minimum of eight contact hours with students, but these hours can cover anything like a lecture, workshop, thesis supervision, so they are somewhat flexible.
How do I apply for funding?
Funding for Erasmus+ Staff Mobility is limited each year. To facilitate the management of this funding, there are two calls per year for applications.
Call 1 - takes place in late summer and covers planned travel in the period September to February of the following academic year.
Call 2 - takes place in December and covers planned travel in the period March to August.
Travel bookings and commitments to host universities should not be made without confirmation that funding is available.
Please note that conferences and research-only visits are specifically excluded from this category of funding.
Please read the full information on the step-by-step guide to Erasmus Staff Exchanges, then complete the application form.
How much is the funding?
Funding is calculated on the basis of daily or weekly rates as allowed by the European Commission (UCD subsistence rates do not apply). A week equals 5 working days, but up to two travel days may also be covered. In addition, staff will receive a travel grant. Travel and subsistence allowances vary depending on the destination country. Once travel is confirmed, the full grant can be calculated.
What paperwork is required?
All staff must complete the following documents:
- Staff Mobility Agreement (work plan) - also signed by the host university
- Erasmus Grant Agreement
- Confirmation Certificate
- Staff Mobility for Training report form (online via EU database)
- Receipt
Erasmus - Opportunities for Administrative and Technical Staff within Europe
The Erasmus exchange programme also provides funding for administrative and technical staff to spend 1-6 weeks (in certain cases, a shorter period may be permitted provided a justification can be made) on exchange in another university.
Why should I participate?
- To acquire knowledge or specific know-how from experiences and good practices abroad
- To acquire practical skills relevant for your current job and professional development
- To build cooperation between higher education institutions
What kind of training is offered?
The stay in the partner enterprise can consist of:
- short secondment period
- job-shadowing scheme
- study visit
- workshop
- structured staff week
Please note that conferences are specifically excluded from this mobility.
Where can I go?
There is no list of approved partners, but the hosting partner institution must hold an ECHE (Erasmus Charter for Higher Education). If in doubt, please contact UCD Global for clarification. They must also be in the EU, EEA or Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Turkey, Serbia or North Macedonia.

Structured staff weeks will have set deadlines for applications.
Partner institutions must agree and endorse a Mobility Agreement in advance of travel. Staff must obtain the agreement of their Head of Unit for the training. Heads of Unit must agree to host a training visit, if requested, during the 18 months following their staff going abroad.
